This week (21–23 April 2026) Veterinary Medicines Directorate were in Bangkok, Thailand, working with the Thailand Food and Drug Administration (Thai FDA) to pilot the Veterinary Medicines Regulatory Authority Self-Assessment Tool (VMRA‑SAT).
The Thai FDA is a joint regulatory authority overseeing both human and veterinary medicines, providing a strong One Health foundation for this important exercise.
We were honoured to meet with the Secretary General, Ms. Supattra Boonserm, and Ms. Charunee Krisanaphan (Head of Pharmaceutical substances promotion Subdivision) alongside members of the veterinary medicines, human medicines, and regulatory policy teams & colleagues from the Department of Livestock Development (Thailand).
⭐This workshop marks another new milestone as Thailand is the first country in Asia to pilot the VMRA‑SAT, further expanding the global piloting of the tool.
🛠️The tool is designed to help countries assess how effectively they regulate veterinary medicinal products (VMPs) and supports countries to:
🥇Understand their current regulatory maturity via a rating system
🧐 Identify strengths and priority areas for improvement
🔗 Strengthen systems for veterinary medicines regulation
This activity is being supported by Noel Joseph and Dr. Osi Oyati (DVM)
from Veterinary Medicines Directorate working closely with Thai counterparts to ensure the tool is applied in a practical, context‑specific way. Dr Agatha Ugboma from World Organisation for Animal Health presented at the workshop and highlighted the role of World Organisation for Animal Health in strengthening the regulation of veterinary medicines globally.
🙏We thank the Thai FDA and partners for their leadership, support, openness and commitment to strengthening regulatory systems that protect animal health, public health and food safety.
